Fort William is well known as an outdoor adventure destination. With stunning scenery of mountains, glens, rivers and lochs, there is no shortage of places to visit and things to do in the area.

The Forestry Commission have numerous forest walks for you to enjoy, either to cycle along or walk along, many of these tracks are in the vicinity of Tower Ridge Apartments, and along the way you will get to see an abundance of local wildlife.  The apartments themselves are located beside the cycle path which runs between Aonach Mor and Fort William.

Perhaps a walk along the Caledonian Canal, now part of the Great Glen Way and on the way take in Neptune’s Staircase, located at Banavie and consisting of 8 locks and conceived by the engineer Thomas Telford.

Perhaps you will take a journey on the steam train from Fort William to Mallaig.  Along the way you will cross over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.  Some of the “Harry Potter” films were filmed in this area; ‘close your eyes and imagine yourself on a magical journey to Hogwarts!’  Whether you drive or take the train, a trip to Mallaig is highly recommended.  Along the way you will pass the Glenfinnan Monument, built to commemorate the raising of the standard of the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stewart).  Further on your journey you will pass the ‘Silver Sands of Morar’ with spectacular views looking out to the Small Isles of Muck, Rum, Eigg and Canna.  Mallaig is a fishing port and also has a ferry terminal with boats travelling to the Small Isles, Knoydart and the Isle of Skye (Armadale).

If you want to stay close to the centre of Fort William, you may wish to visit the Ben Nevis Distillery; the West Highland Museum; Treasures of the Earth; the Three Wise Monkeys Climbing Centre; a trip down Loch Linnhe on Souters Lass; a Gondola ride up Aonach Mor; a visit to Fort William Leisure Centre; a round of Golf!
